Michael Specter @ TED

Michael Specter is a staff writer for the New Yorker. His new book, Denialism, asks why we have increasingly begun to fear scientific advances instead of embracing them. -No doubt, he is an accomplished writer and an interesting Speaker, but,

That’s not why I’ve chosen to feature him here. The reason he’s here is because he demonstrates in this Presentation at TED, a technique of Speaking that I strongly suggest you use in some instances. Instead of standing at a Lectern and Reading a Speech, or continually referring to voluminous notes sitting on a Lectern, he uses NoteCards. He carries them in his left hand and refers to them as needed.

Notice how he shuffles them. His hand movements are small, quite unnoticeable, never interfering with his Presentation which is smooth and natural. And, one of the biggest benefits: He’s Free to move about the stage! This is a technique that I highly recommend and one which you should be able to learn to use quite easily.

Watch the entire video and you’ll see how unobtrusive using notecards can be. It’s an easy way to improve your Speaking professionalism.
